What the surf widget shows
- Your beach and a rating: Flat, Poor, Fair, Good or Firing, with bars you can read at a glance.
- Wave height, big, in feet or meters, with the swell period and an arrow for the way the swell is heading.
- Water temperature, plus the air temperature and visibility.
- The next high and low tide in the beach's own time, and a tide line with a dot at right now.
- Wind speed and direction.
The rating weighs wave height, swell period and wind together. Wind blowing roughly against the swell counts as offshore, so you don't have to set which way your beach faces.
Pick your beach
Choose a beach in the app and the widget sticks with it. If you don't pick one and you're near the coast, it uses where you are, rounded to about 1 km. Your beach is saved only on your iPhone.
Where the numbers come from
Waves, swell, water temperature and tides come from Open-Meteo's marine forecast, and air temperature, visibility and wind from its weather forecast. iOS refreshes widgets on its own schedule, usually every 15 to 30 minutes, and opening the app refreshes it right away.
Tide times are estimated from the forecast sea level, and every number here is a forecast. Don't use the widget for navigation or safety. Check local conditions and the lifeguards before you paddle out.
Put it on your Lock Screen
- Open ABC Widgets. In the Lock Screen preview, add Surf from Ready-made to a side and pick your beach.
- Press and hold your Lock Screen, tap Customize, then tap the widget area under the clock.
- Choose ABC Widgets and add that side. Tap Done.
Pair it with Weather Hours or Sun & Moon on the other side. Or let one side take turns, switching between Surf and other ready-mades every 15 minutes.
